Affirmation Cravings
Marley Amico wants you to decenter men
I think about men all the time.
I was thinking about men at Pioneer Works while viewing I Think, I Draw, I Am, an exhibition of musician and artist Daniel Johnston’s drawings. My favorite piece in the show is a drawing of a man and a woman in conversation. The woman’s speech bubble is filled with colorful doodles of sunshine, flowers, and birds. The man, in response, is slumped over, responding with halfhearted black and grey images of doom and gloom.
We all know this guy. This guy offers nothing, he’s miserable to be around, he clearly dislikes his girlfriend. He might skateboard. He might be really into Aphex Twin. He might be at Coyote Club until 3am with his bros and pass out on his couch watching Mad Max: Fury Road and “forget” to text his girlfriend back. I digress.
I was totally enamored by the exhibition, which I stumbled upon with my friend on an impromptu birthday excursion to Red Hook. But throughout the day I found myself distracted by thoughts of the man who introduced me to Daniel Johnston. My ex-boyfriend. I wanted to text my ex-boyfriend and tell him I thought of him at the Daniel Johnston exhibition.
